The city has a very interesting landscape. It is a hilly area with many high points. The ground rises from 780 to 1,612 meters above sea level. Many hills are found in all parts of the city. One famous person connected to the name is the explorer David Livingstone. A man named David Clement Scott lived there for many years. These rocks are impervious, meaning they do not let water pass through easily. This makes them poor aquifers for groundwater. However, they are useful for building roads and structures. Blantyre sits on the edge of the Eastern African Rift. Because of this, the city is prone to earthquakes from local faults.
The history of Blantyre began with missionary work in 1876. The Church of Scotland founded the settlement. It was named after Blantyre in South Lanarkshire, Scotland. This was the birthplace of the explorer David Livingstone. Henry Henderson chose the site for the mission. Later, David Clement Scott led the mission from 1881 to 1898. He built the St Michael and All Angels Church between 1888 and 1891. 
Blantyre grew through its role in colonial trade, specifically ivory. It became a crossroads for trade in Southern Africa. By 1895, it attained municipality status. This made it the oldest municipality in Malawi. 

The economy of Blantyre is driven by manufacturing and industry. The city contains eight designated industrial areas. These include Makata, Ginnery Corner, Maselema, Limbe, Chirimba, South Lunzu, Maone, and Chitawira. Some areas are classified as heavy industry. Makata and Limbe are the only two heavy industrial sites. They host more than 30 companies each. Other areas like Chitawira are light industrial sites. These industries produce shoes, maize flour, beer, soft drinks, and tobacco. Most industrial sites are located along the banks of major rivers.
Demographics show a diverse population of many ethnic groups. The Lomwe are the largest group at 39.59%. The Ngoni are the largest minority at 19.12%. Other groups include the Yao, Chewa, and Sena. Religion is also very diverse in the city. Catholicism is the largest denomination at 17.94%. The Church of Central Africa Presbyterian is the largest minority at 17.61%. Islam and other Christian groups also have significant presence. The climate is a tropical savanna type. It features a rainy season from November to April. The dry season lasts from May to October.
