Blacklight

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A blacklight is a special kind of lamp that sends out ultraviolet light. This is often called UV-A light. Most of this light is invisible to our eyes.

Some blacklights use a dark filter to block visible light. This lets the UV-A light pass through easily. These lamps have a dim violet glow when they are on. This makes them perfect for seeing fluorescence. Fluorescence is when a substance glows with color under UV light.

There are different ways these lamps work. One common type uses fluorescent tubes. These tubes use a special coating called a phosphor. This phosphor emits UV-A light instead of white light. Some tubes use europium-doped strontium fluoride to reach a peak of 370 nanometres. Other types use lead-doped barium silicate for a peak around 350 nanometres.

Another type uses mercury vapor. These high-power lamps can reach 1,000 watts. They do not use phosphors at all. They rely on the light from mercury instead.

We can trace the history of this light back to Robert Williams Wood. He invented the original UV filters made of special glass. This is why doctors often call the tool a Wood's lamp. In 1925, researchers used his ideas in medicine. They used the light to find fungal infections in hair.

Today, many different companies make these bulbs. Some use the Osram system for naming them. Others use the Philips system. These tools have changed a lot since the early 1900s.

People use blacklights for many important jobs. They help experts check if banknotes or old paintings are real. Some people use them for rock-hunting or finding scorpions at night.

In science, they can find leaks in air conditioning systems. They are also used in bug zappers. These lamps do not have a filter, so they look bright blue. This helps attract insects to the trap. Some people even use them for artistic lighting or body paint.

Doctors also use Wood's lamps to help keep people healthy. They shine the light on skin to look for infections. For example, some bacteria glow orange or yellow-green. The light can also help find certain skin diseases.

However, we must be careful with strong UV light. The World Health Organization says UV-A can affect our skin. It can cause skin ageing or wrinkles. It can also be bad for our eyes. It is best to use domestic blacklights safely.
