Even though its name says black, its skin can be grey or brown. This rhino is smaller than the white rhinoceros. It has a pointed lip. This lip is prehensile, which means it can grasp things. The rhino uses it to grab leaves and twigs.

Most black rhinos have two horns. These horns are made of keratin. The rhino uses them to dig for roots and break branches.

Its thick skin helps protect it from sharp plants. Small birds, like oxpeckers, often sit on its skin. These birds eat tiny pests like ticks.

Today, black rhinos are critically endangered. This means they are at a very high risk of disappearing. There are about 3,142 mature rhinos left in the wild. Many rhinos have been lost to poaching and habitat loss. Some groups, like the western black rhinoceros, are already extinct.

To help, people move rhinos to safe nature reserves. This has helped them live again in places like Malawi and Zambia.
