Birth defect

life science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

A birth defect is a condition that is present when a baby is born. These conditions can change how a body part looks or how it works. Doctors group them into two main types. Structural disorders change the shape of a body part. Functional disorders change how a body part performs its job. Some functional disorders are called metabolic disorders, which affect how the body uses energy. Some defects might be both structural and functional. These conditions can be mild or they can be very severe.

Many different things can cause these changes to happen. Most birth defects come from a complex mix of factors. Some are caused by problems with genes or chromosomes. Others happen because of things a mother is exposed to during pregnancy. This includes certain infections or specific chemicals. These harmful substances are known as teratogens. A mother might also face risks from things like smoking or drinking alcohol. Not having enough folate can also be a risk factor. Having poorly controlled diabetes is another factor that matters.

Scientists and doctors study these causes to help prevent them. One famous example involves a drug called thalidomide. It was made near the end of the 1950s to help with sleep and nausea. It was used in almost 50 countries between 1956 and 1962. Sadly, it caused many children to be born with limb defects. This helped doctors realize how drugs can act as teratogens. Another example is Vitamin A. While it is a vitamin, taking too much can be harmful to a growing baby. Even a single dose of certain versions can cause serious issues.

There are many important numbers to know about these conditions. Birth defects affect about 96 million people around the world. In the United States, they occur in about 3% of newborns. In 2015, these defects resulted in about 628,000 deaths. This number was lower than the 751,000 deaths recorded in 1990. The most common cause of death was congenital heart disease. This accounted for 303,000 deaths. Neural tube defects caused about 65,000 deaths.

We can see how these facts connect to the world around us. Doctors use screening tests to find defects before a baby is born. Some defects are visible right at birth. Once a defect is found, there are many ways to help. Treatment might include surgery to fix a shape. It might also include medicine or special therapy. Some people use assistive technology to help them live well. By understanding these causes, doctors can better support families and new babies.
