Geography and water systems define the city's layout. Unlike many large cities, Birmingham does not have large rivers flowing through it. Instead, it has small rivers like the River Tame, the River Rea, and the River Cole. The Severn is one of the closest main rivers, located west of the city center. However, the city is famous for its many canals. These are known collectively as the Birmingham Canal Navigations. These waterways were vital for the city's historical development.

The history of the area stretches back to the Stone Age. Evidence shows human activity dating to around 8000 BC. During the Bronze Age, between 1700 BC and 1000 BC, people settled the area more intensively. In AD 48, Roman legions built the Metchley Fort in modern-day Edgbaston. Later, the Beormingas established a settlement in the forested Arden region. The name Birmingham comes from the Old English term for the home of the Beormingas. This tribe may have been led by a figure named Beorma.

Birmingham transformed into a significant commercial center in 1166. This happened when Peter de Bermingham obtained a charter to hold a market. He created a planned market town near the site of the Bull Ring. By 1327, it was the third-largest town in Warwickshire. In the 1600s, the city became a hub for iron merchants. These merchants traded goods as far away as the West Indies. This trade allowed local metalworkers to move from simple tasks to highly skilled trades. By 1700, the population had grown fifteen-fold.

The 18th century brought the Midlands Enlightenment. This was a period of intense scientific and philosophical exchange. Leading citizens, such as members of the Lunar Society, connected pure science with manufacturing. This created a "chain reaction of innovation." This link helped connect the Scientific Revolution to the Industrial Revolution. Birmingham's industrial growth was unique compared to northern textile towns. Instead of large factories for one product, Birmingham relied on small, specialized workshops.

Many major industrial and financial institutions began here. Matthew Boulton pioneered the factory system at the Soho Manufactory.

Other inventors like John Roebuck helped start the modern chemical industry. The city also became a financial leader. Lloyds Bank was founded in 1765. Ketley's Building Society, the world's first building society, started in 1775. By 1800, the West Midlands had more banking offices per person than London. This economic strength made Birmingham "the first manufacturing town in the world" by 1791.

The 20th century brought both destruction and change. From the summer of 1940 to the spring of 1943, the German Luftwaffe heavily bombed the city. This period is called the Birmingham Blitz.

Birmingham is a major international center for retail, events, and conferences. Its metropolitan economy has a GDP of £95.94bn. The city is also a massive center for higher education. It has five universities, including the University of Birmingham.
