He was a poet and a storyteller. He also worked as a doctor for animals. This job is called a veterinarian.

Diop grew up in a place called Dakar. His brothers shared old tales with him. Later, he met many storytellers. One was a Wolof griot named Amadou Koumba. A griot is a West African storyteller. Diop used these oral tales in his own books.

His stories mixed real life with magic. They showed people, animals, and spirits together. His book, Tales of Amadou Koumba, was very famous. It came out in 1947. He won big prizes for his writing. One prize was the Grand prix littéraire d'Afrique noire.

Diop also worked as a diplomat. This means he represented his country. He was the first Senegalese ambassador to Tunisia. When he took this job, he said he "broke his pen." This meant he would stop writing for a while. But he did not stop forever. He later wrote many memoirs. These are books about a person's life. He died in 1989 at age 82.
