Bild is a major German tabloid newspaper published by Axel Springer SE. The name "Bild" means "picture" in German. This name reflects the paper's heavy use of photography to tell stories. While it is a tabloid in style, it uses a broadsheet size. It is currently the best-selling newspaper in Europe. It also holds the position of the sixteenth-largest circulation in the world. Because of its massive reach, it carries significant influence over German politicians.

The publication follows a specific weekly schedule to reach its audience. It is published every day from Monday to Saturday. On Sundays, the company publishes a sister paper called Bild am Sonntag. This Sunday edition has its own editors and a different style. To ensure national coverage, Bild uses 32 localized editions across Germany. It also prints special editions for German tourists in places like Spain, Italy, Turkey, and Greece. Some readers can even purchase the paper from specialized vending machines.

Axel Springer founded the newspaper in 1952. The paper was originally influenced by the British tabloid Daily Mirror. For most of its history, the headquarters remained in Hamburg. In March 2008, the company moved its main operations to Berlin. They stated that Berlin was an essential base for a national newspaper. The paper has seen massive shifts in its readership over the decades. In the 1980s, Bild sold more than five million copies every day. By 2001, it was the most read newspaper in both Germany and Europe.

Specific circulation numbers track the paper's historical peak and recent decline. In 1993, the circulation was slightly more than four million copies. During the 1995–1996 period, it reached 4,300,000 copies. By 2001, the circulation was 4,396,000 copies. However, print circulation has been declining in recent years. By the end of 2005, the figure dropped to 3.8 million copies. In 2010, the daily circulation was 3,548,000 copies. In 2018, the average print run was 2.2 million copies. Despite the decline in print, the digital subscription service, Bild plus, reached 416,567 readers in 2018.

The editorial direction of Bild has evolved significantly since its inception. Initially, the paper's drift was conservative and nationalist. During the Cold War, it referred to the GDR as the Soviet Occupation Zone. In the years following 1966, the paper influenced public opinion against the West German student movement. Some activists even blamed the paper for the climate surrounding the 1968 assassination attempt on Rudi Dutschke. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, the focus shifted toward celebrity stories. Today, the paper maintains a populist tone and supports liberal democracy, Israel, NATO, and capitalism.

Bild is often described as being notorious for its sensationalism. This means it uses inflammatory language and shocking stories to attract readers. Critics, including the magazine Spiegel, often question its journalistic quality and moral standards. In 2004, the German Press Council publicly reprimanded Bild twelve times. This represented one-third of all reprimands issued to any newspaper that year. Investigative journalist Günter Wallraff also criticized the paper's unethical research and lack of respect for privacy. He documented these experiences in his books, "Der Aufmacher" and "Zeugen der Anklage."

Recent years have seen Bild engage in intense international reporting and controversy. During the COVID-19 pandemic, editor Julian Reichelt accused Chinese leadership of withholding information. The paper has also faced criticism regarding its coverage of international conflicts. In 2024, Bild formalized an alliance with the Israeli newspaper Israel Hayom. It has also been involved in disputes regarding the authenticity of news photos from the Gaza Strip. These incidents highlight how the paper functions as a powerful, and often controversial, tool in global media systems.
