Bilal ibn Rabah was a very important person in early Islamic history.

He was born in the city of Mecca around the year 580. Many historians look closely at his family history. Some say his father, Rabah, was an Abyssinian prisoner of war. Other accounts suggest his father was an Arab who had become a slave. Regardless of his father, Bilal was born into slavery. His mother, Hamamah, was a princess from Abyssinia who had been captured. Because of his status, Bilal worked for a master named Umayyah ibn Khalaf.

Bilal's life changed when he became one of the first people to follow Islam. This was a very difficult time for him. His master, Umayyah, wanted him to give up his new faith. To try to stop him, Umayyah treated Bilal very harshly. He had Bilal whipped and spread out on the hot desert sands. He even placed a heavy, hot rock on Bilal's chest. Despite this pain, Bilal remained very firm in his belief. He repeatedly said "ahad, ahad," which means "one, one," to show there is only one God. Eventually, a man named Abu Bakr helped free Bilal from slavery.

After he was free, Bilal became a close companion of the prophet Muhammad. He was known for having a very special voice. Many described him as a man of tall and impressive stature. He had dark skin, sparkling eyes, and a deep, melodious voice. Because his voice was so beautiful, Muhammad gave him a historic job. Bilal became the first mu'azzin, which is the person who calls others to prayer. This role is still very important in mosques today.

Bilal also held many important jobs in the city of Medina. He served as a minister for the Bayt al-Mal, which was the treasury. In this role, he helped manage money for the community. He used these funds to support people who needed help, such as widows and orphans. He also helped wayfarers, which are people traveling on a journey. Bilal was a trusted leader who helped the new Islamic state function. He even took part in the Battle of Badr during the early years of Islam.

One of the most famous moments for Bilal happened in the year 630 CE. This was during the Conquest of Makkah. When the city was captured peacefully, Bilal was chosen for a very special task. He climbed to the top of the Kaaba to perform the adhan, or call to prayer. This act was a huge symbol for the people of that time. It marked the end of the old ways in Makkah and the start of Islam as the main faith there. Today, people remember Bilal as a symbol of loyalty and strength.
