The land is surrounded by several bodies of water. Lamon Bay lies to the north. The Philippine Sea is to the east. To the west, the region meets the Sibuyan Sea and Ragay Gulf.

Geography plays a major role in the region's makeup. The Bicol Region accounts for 5.9% of the total land area of the Philippines. The land is divided into different types of usage. About 69.3% of the land is classified as alienable and disposable. This means it is land that can be owned or used for various purposes. The remaining 30.7% consists of public forest areas.

The history of Bicol is filled with many different names and stories. Anciently, the region was known as Ibalong. Scholars interpret this name in several ways. It might come from "ibalio," meaning to bring to the other side. It could also mean "ibalon," referring to people from the other side. Some believe it describes people who are hospitable and give gifts to visitors.

The Spanish first landed in Magallanes, Sorsogon, in 1567. By 1569, a system of barangays, or villages, was already in place. Early leaders were called datu, or chieftains. These leaders were chosen for their strength, courage, and intelligence. They primarily led their families and communities during crises like wars.

Spanish influence changed the culture and economy of the region. Missionaries from the Augustinian and Franciscan orders established the first churches. These include the San Francisco Church and the Naga Cathedral in Naga City.

The region also became a center for shipbuilding. Workers built Manila Galleons in many astilleros, or shipyards. These were the heaviest ships of their time. They were made from local hardwood forests. These ships were essential for trade between Asia and the Americas. This trade brought Latin-American influences to Bicol. For example, chili peppers arrived from Mexico. This is why Bicolano cuisine is famous for being spicy.

Today, the region is a busy place with a growing population. As of the 2024 census, the population is 6,064,426. The region is divided into 107 municipalities and 3,471 barangays. Camarines Sur is the largest province by both area and population. It covers about 30.4% of the regional land area. It has a population of 2,068,244. In contrast, Catanduanes is the smallest province. It makes up only 8.4% of the regional area and has 271,879 people. Urbanization has changed where people live. In the 1980s, people moved toward areas with new roads and trade. By 1990, people moved toward urban centers for jobs. This caused population "spill-over" into towns near Naga and Legazpi.

The people of the region are called Bicolanos. They are descendants of Austronesian-speaking people from the Iron Age. Bicolanos also have Spanish, Chinese, and Arab ancestry. In fact, about 2 out of 10 Bicolanos have Spanish descent.

Most Bicolanos are devout Roman Catholics. This is due to the influence of Spanish missionaries. Naga City serves as the religious center. It is the seat of the Archdiocese of Caceres, one of the oldest dioceses in the country. The Bicolano language is actually a group of many different languages. These include Coastal Bikol, Inland Bikol, Pandan Bikol, and Bisakol.

Language in Bicol is very diverse and complex. Many people speak Central Bikol, which is used in books and media. However, Central Bikol is not a single standard language. Other forms, like Rinconada Bikol or Albay Bikol, can be hard for others to understand. In the provinces of Masbate and Sorsogon, people speak Visayan languages. These include Masbateño, Waray Sorsoganon, and Northern Sorsoganon. Collectively, these are called Bisakol. In the north, many people speak Tagalog. This shows how different cultures and languages meet in one region.
