He wrote primarily in the Bengali language. His literary works are celebrated for their deep connection to rural life. Many of his stories focus on the people and landscapes of Bengal. His writing is often described as having a unique tenderness and poetic quality. Critics have noted that his work explores perception and memory rather than just social realism. This approach allows his stories to feel deeply personal and observant.

Bandyopadhyay’s life involved many different roles before he focused on literature. He began his professional life as a teacher. He also worked as a traveling publicist for the Goraksini Sabha. Later, he served as a secretary for Khelatchandra Ghosh. This position required him to manage an estate in Bhagalpur. During this time, he also tutored the family and taught at the Khelatchandra Memorial School. Eventually, he returned to his native region to teach at the Gopalnagar Haripada Institution. He continued this teaching job alongside his writing until his death in 1950.

His family history is rooted in the village of Panitar. His great-grandfather was an Ayurvedic physician, which is a traditional type of doctor. Bandyopadhyay was born in 1894 in Muratipur village. His father, Mahananda Bandyopadhyay, was a Sanskrit scholar and a storyteller. Bibhutibhushan was the eldest of five children. He attended Bongaon High School, which is one of the oldest institutions in British India. He was a talented student and earned a first division placement in his examinations. He later studied economics, history, and Sanskrit at Surendranath College in Kolkata. Although he was admitted to postgraduate classes, he could not afford to enroll in the master's program.

His literary career reached a turning point in 1928. Before this, his first short story, "Upekshita," had been published in the magazine *Prabasi* in 1921. However, he did not receive significant critical attention until the publication of his first novel, *Pather Panchali*. This novel, which means "Song of the Little Road," was first a serial and then a book in 1929. This work brought him great prominence in Bengali literature. His writing style was so effective that filmmaker Satyajit Ray praised him. Ray noted that Bandyopadhyay's lines revealed characters so well that physical descriptions were often unnecessary.

Bandyopadhyay’s body of work includes several distinct types of settings and themes. Many of his novels are set in rural Bengal, such as *Adarsha Hindu Hotel*, *Ichamati*, and *Bipiner Sansar*. These stories often use locations like Bongaon as their backdrop. Other works move away from the village to explore different environments. For example, his novel *Aranyak*, which means "of the forest," is set in a forest in Bhagalpur. He also wrote *Chander Pahar*, which means "Mountain of the Moon." His characters and settings allow readers to experience different aspects of the Indian landscape.

His influence extends into the world of cinema and international translation. Satyajit Ray adapted several of his books into a famous series called the Apu Trilogy. This trilogy includes *Pather Panchali*, *Aparajito*, and *Apur Sansar*. These films helped bring his stories to a much wider audience. Many of his books have also been translated into English. Gopa Majumdar translated *Aparajito*, and Suchismita Banerjee Rai translated *Aranyak* in 2017. Other works like *Ashani Sanket* and *Ichhamati* have also been translated into English. Even his character Taranath Tantrik became popular enough for his son, Taradas, to extend the series.

Bandyopadhyay died on November 1, 1950, in Ghatshila due to a heart attack. His literary legacy was recognized posthumously in 1951. He was awarded the Rabindra Puraskar, a prestigious literary award in West Bengal, for his novel *Ichhamati*. His home in Ghatshila, named Gouri Kunja after his wife, remains a significant site. The Government of Jharkhand has preserved this house for the public. His life and works continue to be studied as essential parts of modern Indian literature.
