Dancers use hand signs called mudras. They also use their eyes and face muscles to show feelings. The name comes from three ideas. Bhavam means feelings. Ragam means melody. Talam means rhythm. Together, they make a dance that is full of meaning.

A singer and a group of musicians play music. They use drums and a drone instrument. The dancer's teacher, or guru, helps lead the show. This role is called a nattuvanar. Long ago, the dance was called Sadiraattam. It was mostly done in Hindu temples. In 1910, the British government banned temple dancing. But many people protested this ban. They worked hard to save the dance. Today, people perform it on big stages all over the world.
