The show follows Samantha Stephens, a beautiful witch played by Elizabeth Montgomery. She marries a mortal man named Darrin Stephens, played by Dick York and later Dick Sargent. Samantha wants to live a quiet life as a suburban housewife. However, her magical family often interferes with her marriage. They do not approve of her marrying a man without magic. These magical interruptions often create funny and chaotic situations for the couple.

Magic in the show is very specific and fun to watch. Samantha usually performs her spells by twitching her nose. These magical moments are often paired with special music and visual effects. To keep their society secret, witches must hide their powers from most mortals. Samantha tries very hard to keep her magic hidden from Darrin's world. This creates many problems at his advertising job at McMann and Tate. Most episodes involve Darrin becoming a victim of a spell. These spells cause havoc with his boss, neighbors, and even his parents.

Sol Saks created the series, which aired on ABC for eight seasons. It first began on September 17, 1964, and ended on March 25, 1972. The show was a massive hit for the network. During its first season, it was the second-highest-rated show in America. It stayed in the top ten for its first three seasons. The series was even ranked as the 50th greatest TV show of all time by TV Guide in 2002. One famous episode, "Divided He Falls," was even ranked among the 100 greatest episodes ever.

Many actors played important roles in the Stephens family and their neighbors. Agnes Moorehead played Samantha's mother, Endora, who often caused trouble. David White played Larry Tate, who was Darrin's boss. The show also featured characters like Tabitha, Samantha's daughter, played by Erin Murphy. The production faced several difficult changes due to the health or death of actors. For example, Alice Pearce played Gladys Kravitz until she passed away in 1966. Sandra Gould then took over the role of Gladys. When Marion Lorne died in 1968, her character, Aunt Clara, was not replaced.

Bewitched is a classic example of a romantic comedy with a supernatural twist. It uses magic as a way to show the struggles of a young couple. The show's setting is often a house at 1164 Morning Glory Circle. This home is located in a suburban neighborhood in Connecticut or New York. Even though the show is old, people still watch it through syndication. It remains a beloved part of television history because of its humor and heart. The show's mix of magic and everyday life makes it very special.
