The story is about a man named Franz Biberkopf. He has just finished time in prison. He tries to live a better life in the city. However, he faces many hard jobs and struggles. He must deal with crime and the rise of Nazism.

The book uses a very special way of telling a story. Döblin used a method called montage. This means he mixes many different things together. He includes songs and newspaper articles in the text. He also adds speeches and even parts of other books. This helps move the plot forward. Some people say his style is like the writer Kafka. He uses something called experienced speech. This blends the way a person thinks with the way a narrator tells a story.

Writing a book like this is a big task. The story is set in a working-class part of Berlin. It takes place during the 1920s. The author wanted to show the real life of the city. Translating this book into English is also a hard job. Eugene Jolas translated it in 1931. That version was not very popular with readers. People did not like how it handled everyday speech. Later, Michael Hofmann made a new translation in 2018. He even used a special dialect to make it sound real.

Many people have turned this book into movies. The first film was made in 1931. Piel Jutzi was the director of that movie. Alfred Döblin even worked on that version himself. The second version was a very long TV series. Rainer Werner Fassbinder directed it in 1980. It lasted for 15 hours in total. People in New York City had to watch it over three nights.

A third film came out more recently. Burhan Qurbani directed this version in 2020. It premiered at the 70th Berlin International Film Festival.

This story can change to fit new times. In the 2020 film, the main character is different. His name is Francis instead of Franz. He is an Afro-German refugee from Guinea-Bissau. This helps the story connect to new people today. The original manuscript is kept in a special place. It is held at the Museum of Modern Literature. This book shows how art can live on for a long time. It stays important through books and many films.
