In 1789, British settlers arrived in his land. Governor Arthur Phillip wanted to talk to the local people. To do this, he had Bennelong captured. Bennelong stayed with the settlers for a few months. He later escaped, but he and the Governor became friends. Bennelong even learned to speak English.

In 1792, Bennelong traveled to England. He was the first Aboriginal Australian to visit Europe. He stayed in London for three years. He saw many new things, like the Tower of London. He also went to the theatre. His health became poor, so he returned to Australia in 1795.

When he came home, Bennelong chose a traditional life. Some settlers did not like this. He became a respected leader for many local clans. He led about 100 people near Kissing Point. Bennelong died in 1813. People still honor his memory today. [Caption: A painting shows the capture of Bennelong and Colebee in 1789.]
