geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Belmopan is the capital city of Belize. It serves as the administrative center for the nation. The city is located in the Cayo District. It sits inland from the Caribbean Sea. The city is positioned near the Belize River Valley. From this location, you can see the foothills of the Mountain Pine Ridge. Belmopan is a unique urban center because it was a planned community. This means the layout was designed before construction began. It is one of the newest national capital cities in the world.

The history of Belmopan is tied to a major natural disaster. In 1961, Hurricane Hattie struck the coastal city of Belize City. The storm destroyed approximately 75% of the houses and businesses there. Because the old capital was in low-lying areas, it was vulnerable to storm surges. The government decided to build a new capital on higher ground. This new location would not require costly land reclamation. In 1962, a committee selected the current site. The site is located southwest of the old capital. Premier George Cadle Price led a delegation to London to seek funding. On 9 October 1965, Lord Greenwood dedicated the site at mile 49 on the Western Highway.

The name Belmopan has a specific linguistic origin. It is a combination of two local river names. The first part comes from the Belize River, which is the longest river in the country. The second part comes from the Mopan River. The Mopan River empties into the Belize River. Construction began in 1967 to realize this vision. The first phase of the city was finished in 1970. The initial cost was estimated at 40 million Belize dollars. However, only 20 million Belize dollars were available at the start. The first phase was eventually completed at a cost of 24 million Belize dollars.

The city's design follows a specific geometric plan. The layout centers around a Ring Road. This road has a circumference of just under 4 km. Most government buildings are located within or around this road. A large area inside the Ring Road is dedicated to parkland. This greenery is why the City Council calls Belmopan "The Garden City." The National Assembly Building is the focal point of the design. It features grey stone architecture and broad steps. The building was designed to resemble a Pre-Columbian Maya temple. This style honors the cultural heritage of the region. The original buildings used extensive ventilation to handle the tropical climate.

Belmopan has a tropical monsoon climate, known as Am in the Köppen classification. This means the city experiences a long wet season. The wet season runs from May through January. There is also a short dry season during the remaining three months. Interestingly, March and April are the driest months for the city. This is unusual for a tropical monsoon climate. Typically, the driest month occurs after the winter solstice. Temperatures in the city remain somewhat constant throughout the year.
