She was a person who fought for fairness in many ways. People called her "Battling Bella" because she was so determined. She worked to help women, workers, and people facing unfair treatment. Her life showed how one person can push for big changes. She used her voice to speak for those who were ignored.

Bella grew up in New York City. Her parents were immigrants from the Russian Empire. Her father was a butcher who ran a meat market. As a young girl, Bella helped run the cash register at his shop. She was very competitive and loved to win. She also noticed things that felt unfair at her synagogue. For example, she did not like that women sat in the back. When her father died, she even defied tradition to say a special prayer for him.

Bella studied very hard to become a lawyer. She went to Hunter College and then Columbia University. She earned her law degree in 1944. At that time, very few women worked as lawyers. She focused on helping workers and people living in rented homes. She also took on civil rights cases in the South. She even tried to help a man named Willie McGee in a very serious legal case. This showed her bravery in fighting for justice.

In 1970, Bella ran for a seat in the House of Representatives.
