Energy efficiency is a major reason why the bearded vulture focuses on bone. While meat is a common food source, bone provides significant nutritional value. For example, 140 grams of dry bone contains protein equivalent to 111 grams of muscle. Furthermore, the high lipid content in bone marrow makes fresh bones even more energetic than meat. Fresh bones can contain about 108% of the energy found in fresh meat by weight. This allows the bird to survive on carcasses that other animals have already picked clean. They can even return to a dehydrated skeleton months after the soft tissue is gone.
Beyond scavenging, these birds show surprising behaviors in the wild. They have been observed attacking live prey, such as tortoises.
