It can grow on the chin, cheeks, neck, or lips. While most common in adult males, some women also grow them. Beards can serve practical purposes in the natural world. They provide protection from the sun's rays. They also help keep a person warm in cold weather. Different cultures have viewed facial hair in many ways. Some see it as a sign of beauty or wisdom. Others might link it to poor hygiene or being unusual.

Beard growth is a biological process tied to puberty.

It happens when a chemical called dihydrotestosterone stimulates hair follicles. This chemical is produced from testosterone. The levels of testosterone can actually change with the seasons. Genetics also play a big role in how much hair grows. Biologists call beards a secondary sexual characteristic. This means they are mostly unique to one sex. However, they do not play a direct role in making babies.

Scientists have long wondered why beards evolved.

Charles Darwin first suggested an idea in his book, "The Descent of Man." He thought sexual selection might be the reason. This is the idea that certain traits help someone find a mate. Modern biologists believe this is likely true. They say many women find bearded men more attractive. A beard might also signal dominance by making a jaw look larger. Some think it shows a man's overall health.

History shows that beards have many different styles.

The Phoenicians styled their hair in many tight, small curls. Mesopotamian people used curling irons to make ringlets. In ancient Egypt, some high-ranking people dyed their chin hair orange. They even wore metal false beards to show they were leaders. The Greeks saw beards as a sign of being a man. However, Alexander the Great changed this in Macedonia. He wanted his soldiers to be clean-shaven to look tidier.

In ancient Rome, shaving became a very popular fashion.

For a long time, being clean-shaven was a way to show you were Roman. A smooth face helped distinguish Romans from the Greeks. Shaving was even a special festival for young men. Later, the Emperor Hadrian started a trend of growing full beards. This led many other men to follow his style. Because of this, beards became a famous sign of philosophers. For a long time, people assumed anyone with a beard was a wise thinker.
