A beach is a special landform found next to a body of water.

These areas are made of loose particles like sand, gravel, or pebbles. Some beaches even come from living things, such as mollusk shells or coral. Most beaches are in coastal areas where waves and currents work.

These forces deposit and move sediments to shape the land. Sandy beaches cover about one third of the world's coastlines. They are important for people and for nature.

Beaches change based on how waves move.

There are two main types of waves. Constructive waves have a long time between their crests. This allows water to recede and sand to settle. This builds the beach up toward a flat area called a berm. Destructive waves happen much faster. These waves carry sediment away from the shore. In the winter, high energy waves move sand offshore. This makes the beach profile lower during storm seasons.

Wind plays a huge role in shaping the land too.

When wind blows small grains of sand inland, it creates dunes. These sandy hills act like a shield for the land. They offer protection for inland ecosystems and human buildings. The line between a beach and a dune can be hard to see. This is because sediment is always moving between them. The drift line shows where the waves stop wetting the sand. This is where the wind begins to take over.

Different materials make beaches look very different.

White sand often comes from quartz or limestone. Tropical beaches might be made of calcium carbonate from shells. Some beaches even have a pink color from coral fragments.

The color tells us about the local rocks and minerals. Some beaches are steep because they are made of large pebbles. Other beaches are smooth because they have fine, compacted sand. Even the sun can create a salt crust on hot days.

Beaches are vital homes for many living things.

They serve as breeding grounds for sea turtles. Seabirds and penguins also use them for nesting. Humans also use beaches for fun and tourism.

We build hotels, restaurants, and shops near the water. However, human actions and climate change can hurt these places. Rising sea levels might cause 50 percent of sandy beaches to disappear by 2100. We must learn how to protect these amazing places.
