Bauchi is a significant city located in northeast Nigeria. It serves as the administrative center for Bauchi State and the Bauchi Local Government Area. The city is also the heart of the traditional Bauchi Emirate. Geographically, it sits on the northern edge of the Jos Plateau. The city rests at an elevation of 616 meters above sea level.

The surrounding Bauchi State contains twenty different Local Government Areas. These include places such as Tafawa Balewa, Dass, Toro, and Ningi. The Bauchi Local Government Area covers a vast area of 3,687 square kilometers.

The history of the emirate began around 1800 to 1810. A commander named Yakubu founded the emirate during this time. Yakubu was one of the commanders for Sheikh Usman dan Fodio. He conquered the Bauchi High Plains, which was a sparsely wooded savanna region. This region was mostly inhabited by non-Muslim peoples. In 1809, Yakubu founded the town of Bauchi and built protective walls around it. The name of the city comes from a hunter named Baushe. Baushe advised Yakubu to build the city west of the Warinje mountain. In gratitude, Yakubu named the city after the hunter.

Political changes shaped the city over many years. After Yakubu, his son Ibrahim ibn Yakubu became the Emir. Later, Emir Usman moved the capital to Rauta in 1877. However, the town became the headquarters again in 1902. This happened when the British occupied the town and deposed Emir Umaru. Bauchi served as a provincial capital during two different periods in the early 20th century. In 1926, it became the headquarters of Bauchi province. Finally, in 1976, it became the capital of the newly created Bauchi state.

The climate in Bauchi is classified as a tropical savanna climate. On climate maps, this is abbreviated as "Aw" using the Köppen Climate Classification system. The weather patterns follow two distinct seasons. The dry season is characterized by being partially cloudy and hot all year. The wet season is described as being overcast and oppressive. Average annual temperatures typically range from 57 to 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Temperatures can occasionally drop below 51 or rise above 104 degrees. Tourists often visit between early December and early February for the warm weather.

Bauchi is a vital center for trade and industry. The arrival of the railway in 1961 changed the local economy. The city became a major collecting point for cotton and peanuts, also known as groundnuts. It is also a trade center for many crops. These include sorghum, millet, cowpeas, corn, cassava, and various vegetables. People also trade livestock such as cattle, goats, and sheep. Traditional activities like blacksmithing, tanning, and cotton dyeing continue in the area. Modern industry includes a meat-products processing plant and an asbestos factory.

Education is a major part of life in Bauchi. The state is known as one of the advanced centers of learning in Nigeria. It hosts many public and private institutions. These include various colleges, polytechnics, and specialized health technology institutions. Notable schools include Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, which was founded in 1980. It was originally known as the Federal University of Technology. The city is also home to a Federal Polytechnic and Bauchi State University.

Transportation and natural resources support the region's growth. The city lies on the Port Harcourt – Maiduguri railway line. The railway was originally a narrow gauge light railway. It was later converted to a normal gauge. For air travel, people use the Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa International Airport. This airport is located north of Bauchi near the village of Durum. The earth around Bauchi also holds many valuable natural resources. These include crude oil, limestone, iron ore, gypsum, and linite. These materials are used for both industry and commercial consumption.
