The Battle of Pavia was a very important fight in a big war. This war was called the Italian War of 1521–1526. It was fought between the Kingdom of France and the Habsburg Empire. The Empire was ruled by Charles V, who was a very strong leader. He ruled many lands like Spain, Austria, and the Low Countries. This battle helped decide who would have power in Europe.

The fighting happened because the French wanted to control a place called Lombardy. King Francis I of France led his troops to the city of Pavia in October 1524. He brought a large army to surround the city. The French army had many different groups of soldiers. Some were French, but many were hired helpers called mercenaries. These included Swiss, German, and Italian soldiers.

To stop the French, the Empire sent a relief force to help Pavia. This force was led by Charles de Lannoy and the Duke of Bourbon. The Imperial army had many soldiers from Germany, Spain, and Italy. They also had special soldiers called arquebusiers who used early guns. The two sides met in a large area called the Visconti Park. This park was located just outside the city walls of Pavia.

The battle took place on the morning of February 24, 1525. It was a very foggy day, which made it hard to see. The fight lasted for about four hours. King Francis tried to lead his armored horsemen in a charge. He used long spears called lances for this move. However, this old way of fighting did not work well with new gunpowder weapons.

The battle ended with a big defeat for the French army. Many important French leaders were killed during the fight. King Francis I was even captured by the Imperial troops. He was taken to a tower and later moved to Spain. To win his freedom, he had to sign the Treaty of Madrid in 1526. This treaty meant he had to give up some of his lands.
