Some scholars believe he was born in the 830s. Others think he was born in late 811. His father was named Bardas, or Constantine, and his mother was Pankalo. His exact ethnic origins are still a subject of debate among historians. Some sources suggest he had Armenian or Slavic roots. He likely spoke both Greek and Armenian during his life.

His early life was full of movement and hardship. One story says he was a captive in Bulgaria until the year 836.

After escaping to Byzantine territory, he worked as a groom. He eventually caught the attention of Emperor Michael III. Basil was a skilled horse tamer and a strong athlete. He even won a wrestling match against a Bulgarian champion. These talents helped him become the emperor's bodyguard and confidant.

Basil reached the throne through a series of violent political shifts. In 866, Michael III named Basil as co-emperor.

However, Basil soon feared he would lose his power to other courtiers. On September 24, 867, Basil organized the assassination of Michael III. He did this with a small group of companions. After the emperor's death, Basil became the sole ruler, known as the basileus. This transition marked the beginning of his long reign.

As a ruler, Basil focused heavily on legal reform. He is often called the "second Justinian" because of this work. He began a massive project to collect and organize Byzantine laws. This resulted in a collection of sixty books called the Basilika. He also created smaller legal manuals known as the Eisagoge. Although Basil started this work, his son Leo VI finished it. The Basilika remained the law of the empire for centuries.

Basil also managed important military and foreign affairs. In 872, his general Christopher defeated the Paulicians, a group that had rebelled.

Basil also worked with the Holy Roman Emperor, Louis II. They joined forces to fight against the Arabs in the west. This alliance helped the Byzantines capture the city of Bari in 871. However, Basil lost Sicily in 878. Some believe he lost it because he diverted a fleet to move marble for a church.

His final years were marked by family tension and personal loss. His eldest son, Constantine, died in 879. Basil also had a difficult relationship with his younger son, Leo VI. He suspected Leo might be the biological son of Michael III. This suspicion led to Leo being imprisoned for three years.
