In January 1983, a man named William J. Walker was exploring a clay pit. He was an amateur fossil collector. He found a large claw in the Smokejack Clay Pit in Surrey, England. He actually had to go back to the pit to find the missing tip! Later, experts Alan J. Charig and Angela C. Milner studied the bones. They named the dinosaur Baryonyx walkeri in 1986. They named it to honor Mr. Walker for his find. It took six years of hard work to clean the bones from the rock.

Finding Baryonyx changed how we see dinosaurs. Before this, people did not know many large theropods lived in the United Kingdom. This find was called "the best find of the century" in Europe. It showed that some large meat-eating dinosaurs lived near water. Today, we can see a model of its skeleton in the Natural History Museum in London. Walker later brought the find to the Natural History Museum in London. There, palaeontologists Alan J. Charig and Angela C. Milner identified the remains as a theropod. They officially named the species Baryonyx walkeri in 1986 to honor Walker.

Excavating the full skeleton was a massive undertaking that required significant effort. A team of eight museum staff members and several volunteers worked to extract 54 blocks of rock over three weeks. The process of preparing the bones was extremely difficult because the siltstone matrix was very hard. It took six years of almost constant work to remove the rock from the bones. Scientists eventually had to use dental tools and air mallets under a microscope to finish the job. The resulting holotype specimen is about 65 percent complete. It remains the most complete spinosaurid skeleton known to science.

While Baryonyx was once thought to be widespread, modern research has refined its known range. Many fossils previously assigned to the genus in Iberia have been reclassified. For example, a specimen from Portugal once thought to be Baryonyx is now known as Iberospinus.

Other remains in Spain have been moved to new genera like Riojavenatrix. Recent studies in the Isle of Wight also suggest that some material previously linked to Baryonyx may actually belong to other dinosaurs like Ceratosuchops or Riparovenator. This ongoing work helps scientists more accurately map the diversity of the Cretaceous period.

Baryonyx lived in a fluvial environment, which is a landscape shaped by rivers. In these river systems, it coexisted with a variety of other animals. These included other theropods, ornithopods, and sauropods, as well as pterosaurs, crocodiles, turtles, and many types of fish.
