The city is situated on the northern bank of the Damodar River. It serves as the headquarters for the Purba Bardhaman district. The map shows where the district is located within the broader region. Geographically, the area sits at an average elevation of 40 metres. It is located approximately 1,100 km from New Delhi. It is also about 100 km northwest of Kolkata. The city lies along the Grand Trunk Road, which is National Highway 19. This location makes it a vital hub for transport and commerce.

The name Bardhaman has deep historical roots. Some archaeological evidence suggests the region was part of Radh Bengal as far back as 4000 BCE. The specific name may date to the sixth century BCE. It is linked to Vardhamāna, also known as Mahāvīra. He was the 24th Tīrthāṅkara, a spiritual leader, of Jainism. According to the Jain scripture, the Kalpa Sūtra, he spent time in a place called Astikagrama. The area was eventually renamed to honor him. The first written reference to the name appears on a sixth-century AD copper plate found in Mallasarul.

For centuries, the city was defined by the power of the Bardhaman Raj. This royal estate was founded in 1657 by Sangam Rai. He belonged to a Hindu Khatri family from Lahore, Punjab. The Maharajas of Burdwan were premier noblemen in lower Bengal. Their rent-roll, a record of income, exceeded 300,000. Maharaja Mahtab Chand was a particularly notable ruler. He managed the estate with great skill. His loyalty during the Santhal rebellion of 1855–56 and the Indian rebellion of 1857 was significant. Consequently, he received a personal coat of arms in 1868. He also earned the right to a 13-gun personal salute in 1877.

Successive leaders also left a lasting mark on the region's character. Maharaja Bijaychand Mahtab took over in 1888. He gained distinction for his bravery in 1908. He risked his life to save Sir Andrew Fraser, the lieutenant-governor of Bengal. This event occurred during an assassination attempt by freedom fighters. The royal family worked to improve the culture and ecology of the area. They supported the Burdwan Raj College through their estate. This patronage helped produce great poets and musicians. For example, Kashiram Das translated the Mahabharata into Bengali. Later, Pratap Chandra Roy published the first English translation of the epic between 1883 and 1896.

Today, Bardhaman is a major center for higher education. The University of Burdwan was inaugurated on June 15, 1960. Its establishment was made possible by Uday Chand Mahtab. He was the last representative of the Bardhaman Raj. After the Zamindari system was abolished in the 1950s, he left his property to the state. This gift helped create the university. The university uses the Rajbati, the former royal palace, for administration. Academic activities take place at the Golapbag campus. The university also supports a science centre and the Meghnad Saha Planetarium. The planetarium received its main instrument as a gift from the Government of Japan.

The city possesses a rich and diverse cultural landscape. It features many religious sites, such as the Sarbamangala temple. This is a navaratna temple, which means it has nine spires. It is dedicated to the presiding deity of the Bardhaman Raj. The city also contains the 108 Shiva temple complex. This complex was built by Maharani Bishnu Kumari in 1788. Visitors can also find the Curzon Gate. This was built in 1902–1903 for the coronation of Maharaja Bijay Chand Mahatab. The city is also famous for its unique sweets. Sitabhog and Mihidana were originally introduced to honor the Raj family.

Modern Bardhaman is highly connected to the rest of India. The Howrah-Delhi rail track passes directly through the city. The Howrah Rajdhani Express makes a scheduled stop at the Bardhaman railway station. For road travel, the Grand Trunk Road provides easy access. Many buses connect the city to places like Asansol and Purulia. Within the city, people use various forms of transport. These include cycle rickshaws and E-Rickshaws, often called Totos. Small buses and bike services like Rapido also operate locally. This combination of history and modern infrastructure makes Bardhaman a unique place.
