The word "Bangla" can mean the region or the language. Some people think the name comes from ancient tribes or kingdoms. In the 14th century, Shamsuddin Ilyas Shah called himself the first "Shah of Bangala." Later, the name Bangāl became common during the Islamic period. A historian noted that the suffix "al" might come from mounds of earth called "al." These mounds were built in lowlands near the hills. The word "Desh" comes from a Sanskrit word meaning "land" or "country."

This land has a very long and varied history. Many different groups ruled the territory in ancient times. The Maurya Empire and the Gupta Empire were among them. Later, the Buddhist Pala Empire ruled for hundreds of years. In 1204, Muslim rule began in the region. During the Mughal Empire, Bengal was a very wealthy place. It was a major center for making silk and cotton textiles. Some even called it the "Paradise of Countries." It was a very important place for global trade.

In 1757, the British East India Company won the Battle of Plassey. This event started nearly two centuries of British colonial rule. After the British left in 1947, the area became part of Pakistan. It was known as East Pakistan during that time. The two parts of Pakistan were very far apart. This caused many problems for the people living there. In 1971, a war for independence took place. This was the Bangladesh Liberation War. Following the war, Bangladesh became a sovereign nation on 16 December 1971.

Dhaka is the capital and largest city. It serves as the political, financial, and cultural center. Chittagong is the second-largest city and functions as the busiest port.

The name Bangladesh means "Land of Bengal" or "Country of Bengal." The term "Bangla" can refer to the region or the Bengali language. Some theories suggest the name comes from a Bronze Age proto-Dravidian tribe. Others link it to the Iron Age Vanga Kingdom. The earliest known usage of the term is on the Nesari plate from 805 AD. In the 14th century, Shamsuddin Ilyas Shah proclaimed himself the first "Shah of Bangala." A historian named Abu'l-Fazl ibn Mubarak suggested the suffix "al" came from mounds of earth. These mounds, called "al," were raised in lowlands at the foot of hills. The word "Desh" is derived from the Sanskrit word deśha, meaning "land" or "country."

Ancient history in this region involved many different empires. The Maurya Empire covered the territory around 320 to 185 BC. Later, the kingdom of Samatata arose as a tributary to the Gupta Empire. The Buddhist Pala Empire ruled the region from 750 to 1150 AD. This was followed by the Hindu Sena dynasty. In 1204, the Muslim conquest led by Muhammad Bakhtiyar Khalji changed the political landscape. This began a period of Sultanate and Mughal rule. During the Mughal Empire, Bengal was a very prosperous region. It was a major global producer of silk and cotton textiles, especially muslin. Some visitors even called it the "Paradise of Countries."

British colonial rule began after the Battle of Plassey in 1757. The British East India Company defeated the state led by Siraj-ud-Daulah. This battle was a key moment for British control in the Indian subcontinent. Colonial rule lasted for nearly two centuries. During this time, the Bengali textile industry collapsed. The region also suffered during the Great Bengal famine of 1770. This famine caused between ten million deaths. This event killed up to one-third of the population in the Bengal Presidency. Following British rule, the Partition of India occurred in 1947. The Radcliffe Line established new borders for the region.

After the partition, East Bengal became part of the Dominion of Pakistan. It was the eastern and most populous wing of Pakistan. This wing was later renamed East Pakistan. The two parts of Pakistan were separated by over 1,000 miles. This distance caused deep economic inequality between the two wings. Many Bengalis felt political repression and systemic racism from the West Pakistan-based government. This led to the 1971 non-cooperation movement. The Pakistani government responded with a military operation called Operation Searchlight. This led to the Bangladesh Liberation War.

The liberation war lasted for nine months. The Mukti Bahini fought an armed revolution with help from Indian forces. During this conflict, a genocide of ethnic Bengalis occurred. Despite this violence, Bangladesh became a sovereign nation on 16 December 1971. After independence, the country faced many challenges. Sheikh Mujibur Rahman led the nation until his assassination in 1975. Later, Ziaur Rahman became president but was also assassinated in 1981. In the 1980s, Hussain Muhammad Ershad ruled as a dictator. He was overthrown by a mass uprising in 1990. Since then, the country has seen many political shifts, including the recent overthrow of Sheikh Hasina in August 2024.

Today, Bangladesh is a unitary parliamentary republic. It uses the Westminster system of government. It is a middle power with the second-largest economy in South Asia. The country has the fourth-largest Muslim population in the world. It also maintains the third-largest military in South Asia. Bangladesh is a major contributor to United Nations peacekeeping operations. The nation is home to the largest mangrove forest in the world. However, the country faces several serious modern challenges. These include political instability, religious violence, and the adverse effects of climate change. It also manages one of the largest refugee populations in the world.
