Baldur's Gate is a prominent series of role-playing video games. These games are set within the Forgotten Realms, which is a campaign setting for Dungeons & Dragons. The series is famous for offering deep, choice-driven adventures that allow players to inhabit a fantasy world. It is divided into two distinct sub-series. The first is the Bhaalspawn Saga, which focuses on complex storytelling. The second is the Dark Alliance series, which offers a different style of play. While most stories take place in the Western Heartlands, the Bhaalspawn Saga travels to Amn and Tethyr.

In the Bhaalspawn Saga, gameplay relies on a mechanic called pausable real-time. This allows players to manage combat by pausing the action to give orders. The games use the Infinity Engine to create a pre-rendered isometric worldview. This means the camera looks down at the world from an angle. Characters are shown as sprites, which are two-dimensional images used in a three-dimensional space. Players can lead a party of up to six members. These members can be custom characters or non-player characters, known as NPCs, recruited from the world. In contrast, Baldur's Gate 3 uses a different party limit of four characters.

The Bhaalspawn Saga features deep, context-dependent dialogue. This system allows characters to have complex personalities. Many plot twists and side quests are tied to specific NPCs. If a player includes certain NPCs in their party, special events can be triggered. This creates a sense of consequence for the player's social choices. The Dark Alliance series uses a different mechanism. It is a hack-and-slash style game. Players use an overhead third-person view to navigate dungeons. The second Dark Alliance game added more role-playing elements, such as the ability to craft weapons, armor, and amulets.

The history of the series began with BioWare developing the original Baldur's Gate for personal computers. This early game used a real-time modification of the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons (AD&D) 2nd Edition ruleset. The first story follows an orphan raised by a sage named Gorion in Candlekeep. After a violent separation from Gorion, the protagonist must solve a mysterious iron crisis. The sequel, Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn, introduced higher power levels and better graphics. It also allowed for more complex interactions, including friendships and romances between party members. The Bhaalspawn story arc eventually concluded with the expansion pack Throne of Bhaal.

Significant changes occurred in the series' development over many decades. In 2001, the Dark Alliance spin-off was released for the PlayStation 2. This game used rules derived from the 3rd Edition of Dungeons & Dragons. After a long gap, the series was revived in 2012 with the Enhanced Editions. These were developed by Beamdog and Overhaul Games. They updated the original games to work on modern systems like the Nintendo Switch and mobile devices. The series saw another major milestone in 2023. Larian Studios released Baldur's Gate 3. This title moved the series to the Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition ruleset.

Not all projects in the series reached completion. A game called Baldur's Gate III: The Black Hound was planned by Black Isle Studios. It was intended to be a low-key adventure set in the Dalelands. The developers planned to use the Jefferson Engine, which featured 3D effects like dynamic shadows. The game would have focused on quests rather than combat, with characters capping at level eight. However, the project was cancelled in 2003. This happened because the publisher, Interplay, lost the D&D PC license to Atari. The game was reportedly 75% finished before it was halted.

The Baldur's Gate series is deeply connected to the broader systems of tabletop gaming. It translates the rules of Dungeons & Dragons into digital formats. This connection allows players to experience the same logic and math used in physical tabletop sessions. The series has also influenced the computer role-playing game (CRPG) genre. The success of the original Bhaalspawn Saga is credited with revitalizing this entire genre. By combining complex storytelling with structured rule systems, the series bridges the gap between interactive software and traditional fantasy role-playing.
