geography Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Bahrain Island is a large island in the Persian Gulf. It is the biggest island in a group of islands. Most of the people in the country live here. Much of the land is a dry desert. You might see thorn trees or small shrubs.

Near the north coast, the land is more fertile. You can find almond, fig, and pomegranate trees there. The island has some low hills made of limestone. The highest point is the Mountain of Smoke. Mist often wraps around its top. Many oil wells are near this mountain.

The weather is very warm. The average temperature is 28 °C. August is the warmest month. The average temperature then is 38 °C. It does not rain much. The island gets about 144 millimeters of rain each year.

The capital city, Manama, sits on the northeast tip. Bridges and causeways connect the island to other places. One road links Bahrain to the mainland of Saudi Arabia. Another bridge connects the island to Sitrah. Sitrah is where ships take oil away.
