Bacterial cell structure

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Bacteria are tiny living things with very special shapes. This shape is called morphology.

Some bacteria are round like a sphere, which is called a coccus. Others look like rods, which are called bacilli. Some can be a mix of both, called coccobacilli. You might even see spiral shapes or long, thin ones called filamentous bacteria. These shapes are often a key part of what makes a specific species unique. The shape can even change depending on how the bacteria grow.

Being very small is a big advantage for these cells. For example, a common bacterium called Escherichia coli is only 2 micrometers long.

This tiny size gives them a large surface area compared to their volume. This helps them take in nutrients and get rid of waste very quickly. If they were much larger, moving food and waste inside would be much harder. A single Escherichia coli cell has a wet mass of about 1 picogram. About half of its dry mass is made of carbon and proteins.

Most bacteria have a protective layer called a cell wall. This wall is made of a material called peptidoglycan.

Mureine
Mureine

This material is made of two parts called NAM and NAG. The peptidoglycan makes the cell wall stiff and helps it keep its shape. It also protects the cell from internal pressure. If you removed the wall, the cell would be called a protoplast. If you only removed part of it, it would be a spheroplast.

Scientists use a special test called Gram staining to group bacteria.

Gram-positive bacteria have thick walls that turn purple with the dye. Their walls can contain things called teichoic acids. Some of these bacteria might even have a protein layer called an S-layer. Gram-negative bacteria have much thinner walls and they turn pink.

They also have a second outer membrane. This membrane has tiny gates called porins that let in sugars and ions. The space between the membranes is called the periplasm.

Understanding these structures helps us stay healthy. Many medicines called antibiotics work by attacking the bacterial cell wall. For example, penicillin stops bacteria from building their peptidoglycan. Because human cells do not have cell walls, these medicines do not hurt us. Your body also uses a tool called lysozyme to fight germs. This enzyme is found in your tears and it digests bacterial walls. This is a natural way your body protects your eyes from infections.
