Bacteria are tiny living things.

They come in many shapes. Some are round like spheres. Some look like rods. Others twist like corkscrews. This shape is called morphology.

Most bacteria have a hard cell wall. This wall protects the cell. It also helps the cell keep its shape. The wall is made of a material called peptidoglycan. This material makes the wall stiff.

There are two main types of cell walls. We can tell them apart with a special dye. Gram-positive bacteria have very thick walls. These walls turn purple under a lens. Gram-negative bacteria have much thinner walls. These walls turn pink.

Gram-negative bacteria have an extra outer membrane. This layer has tiny holes called porins. These porins act like gates. They let sugars and other bits pass through.

Being small is very important for bacteria. It helps them take in food quickly. It also helps them get rid of waste.

A tiny cell like Escherichia coli is only 2 micrometers long. This small size helps them stay healthy and grow fast.
