Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar was a highly influential Indian jurist, economist, and social reformer.

He is best known for chairing the committee that drafted the Constitution of India. This document established the legal framework for the newly independent nation. Ambedkar also served as the first Law and Justice minister in the cabinet of Jawaharlal Nehru. His life was defined by a constant struggle for the rights of Dalits. Dalits are members of the Mahar caste who were historically treated as untouchables. This status meant they faced severe socio-economic discrimination and social exclusion.

Ambedkar's childhood was marked by these systemic injustices. He was born in 1891 in Mhow, a military cantonment in India. As a student, he was segregated from other children in school. He was not allowed to sit inside the classrooms. Instead, he had to sit on a gunny sack that he carried home. Even basic needs like drinking water were difficult to meet. He could not touch the water vessels or the water itself. A school peon had to pour water from a height for him. If the peon was not available, Ambedkar had to go without water.

Despite these obstacles, Ambedkar pursued an extraordinary academic career. He was a brilliant student who achieved high levels of education abroad. He earned a degree in economics and political science from Bombay University in 1912. Later, he traveled to the United States on a Baroda State Scholarship. He studied at Columbia University in New York City. While there, he was influenced by the philosopher John Dewey and his ideas on pragmatism. Ambedkar earned his Ph.D. in economics from Columbia in 1927.

Ambedkar continued his advanced studies in London. He enrolled at the London School of Economics to work on a doctoral thesis. He also trained in law at Gray's Inn. He earned a master's degree in 1921 and a D.Sc. in Economics in 1923.

During this time, he also became a barrister. His academic success was rare for Indian students in the 1920s. He used his expertise in economics and law to challenge unfair social structures.

As a professional, Ambedkar fought for social freedom through various methods. He worked as a professor, a lawyer, and an economist. He published journals like Mooknayak to give a voice to the marginalized. He also established the Bahishkrit Hitakarini Sabha to promote education for the depressed classes. Ambedkar led direct actions, such as the Mahad Satyagraha, to secure water rights. He also led the Kalaram Temple movement to fight for the right to enter temples.

In 1927, he famously burned copies of the Manusmriti. He did this because the text provided ideological justification for caste discrimination.

In 1932, a major political negotiation occurred known as the Poona Pact. The British government had proposed separate electorates for the Depressed Classes. Mahatma Gandhi opposed this, fearing it would divide the Hindu community. After Gandhi began a fast in prison, negotiations took place. Ambedkar signed the pact with Madan Mohan Malaviya. This agreement resulted in reserved seats for the Depressed Classes in the legislature. Because of this pact, the community received 148 seats instead of the 71 originally proposed.

Ambedkar's leadership was vital during the creation of the Indian state. He chaired the Drafting Committee for the Constitution of India.

His work helped transition India into a modern democracy.

Toward the end of his life, Ambedkar made a significant religious change. In 1956, he renounced Hinduism and converted to Buddhism. This act initiated mass conversions among many Dalits.

He passed away on December 6, 1956. In 1990, the Indian government posthumously awarded him the Bharat Ratna. This is India's highest civilian honor. Today, his followers honor him with the salutation "Jai Bhim." Many also call him "Babasaheb," which means "Respected Father."
