He was born in Budapest, Austria-Hungary, to parents who taught dance. Guttmann actually became a trained dance instructor himself at age sixteen. He later earned a degree in psychology in Austria. As a player, he was a skilled midfielder. He played for teams like MTK Hungária and Hakoah Wien. He even played for the Hungary national team during the 1924 Olympic Games.

Guttmann was a man who loved to travel and move. He often changed clubs, famously saying that a third season was fatal.

His playing career took him across many different lands. In 1922, he moved to Vienna to join the all-Jewish club Hakoah Wien. This team wore blue and white shirts with a Star of David. In 1926, the team traveled to the United States for a tour. A huge crowd of 46,000 people watched them play at the Polo Grounds. This was a record for soccer in America at that time. Guttmann stayed in the U.S. for several years. He played for the New York Giants and the New York Soccer Club. He even helped New York Hakoah win the US Open Cup in 1929.

Life was not always easy for Guttmann during the war years. Because he was Jewish, he faced great danger during the Holocaust. He spent time hiding in an attic in Újpest to stay safe. Later, he was sent to a Nazi forced labor camp near Budapest. He survived this hard time, but his family did not make it. He escaped the camp in December 1944. He was about to be sent to the Auschwitz concentration camp. After the war, he began his journey as a coach again. He worked in Romania and Hungary before moving to Italy.

As a coach, Guttmann was a true leader and a teacher. He coached in ten different countries between 1933 and 1974. He worked in places like Brazil, Italy, and Portugal. Guttmann helped create a new way to play called the 4–2–4 formation. This style used four forwards to attack the other team. He also made sure his players stayed very fit. He insisted on strict diets and hard training sessions. This helped his teams play a very brave and attacking style of soccer. He even helped mentor the famous player Eusébio at Benfica.

His greatest success came when he coached the team Benfica. He led them to win two European Cups in 1961 and 1962. Throughout his career, he won ten different national championships.
