It functions much like a standard job interview in the regular labor market. In this setting, an employer tests an applicant's ability to meet specific job needs. Professionals also assess how well an individual takes direction and handles sudden changes. This process is essential for many reasons in the performing arts world. It helps organizations select talent for single shows or entire seasons of performances. It is also used to find permanent employees for orchestras or dance troupes.

Performers use different methods to demonstrate their specific professional skills. Actors often perform a monologue, which is a long speech by a single character. In film and television, this process is sometimes called a screen test. This allows directors to see how an actor appears on camera. Dancers might present a routine in styles like ballet, tap, or hip-hop. They may also be asked to learn a choreographed piece very quickly. Singers perform songs in popular contexts or arias in classical settings. Other performers, such as acrobats or models, demonstrate a wide range of physical skills.

Musical auditions require specialized technical demonstrations depending on the genre. Instrumentalists in jazz or rock may be asked to sight read printed music. This means playing music they have not seen before. A drummer auditioning for a jazz band might play a slow ballad and an up-tempo swing style. A bassist for a pop band might demonstrate a Motown style or a reggae-style bassline.

Soloists often perform prepared pieces to show their ability to play virtuosic passages. They may also need to improvise a melody over a chord progression. In classical contexts, musicians usually read from sheet music. However, in rock contexts, performers are often expected to have the music memorized.

Preparation for an audition involves both physical and administrative steps. Actors often perform vocal exercises and stretching to warm up, similar to an athlete. They typically bring a professional 8"x10" photo called a head shot. They also provide a resume that lists their acting experience and training.

Some performers hire an agent to access connections with casting directors. These agents help find opportunities, but they usually take a cut of 10% to 20% of the performer's earnings. In film auditions, actors are often given "sides," which are a few pages of a script. These are frequently provided one to three days before the actual audition.

Auditions follow strict protocols to ensure fairness and efficiency. In musical theater, time limits are often strictly enforced by a buzzer. A performer might have a limit of ninety seconds, two minutes, or three minutes. Once the buzzer sounds, the auditionee must stop and leave the stage.

Casting directors may also give last-minute instructions. They might cut the time limit in half or reduce the number of vocal selections. It is vital for performers not to be "thrown off balance" by these changes. Being able to adapt shows that a performer is versatile and easy to work with.

Beyond raw talent, casting directors look for a specific "type" in an actor. This is a combination of personality, looks, and general casting intuition required for a production. They also watch how an actor interacts with the panel. A director might ask an actor to change their delivery or look directly at them. This tests if the performer is cooperative and professional. Even if a performer is not cast, they may receive a "call back." This is a second audition that can happen days, weeks, or even months later.

Auditions serve many different sectors of the arts and education. They are used to select candidates for entry into specialized training programs. This includes ballet schools, circus schools, and university programs like a Bachelor of Music or a Master of Fine Arts. Auditions also help determine who receives performance-related scholarships and grants. They are even used to find representation by talent agencies.

In recent years, the availability of inexpensive video cameras has changed the industry. Casting directors can now request video auditions from performers in different states or even different countries.
