Attica is a historical peninsula located in Greece. It projects into the Aegean Sea in a triangular shape.

The region includes the entire Athens metropolitan area. This area contains the capital city of Athens. It also covers many surrounding suburban towns. To the north, Attica borders the region of Boeotia. To the west, it meets Megaris. The modern administrative region is much larger than the ancient one. It now includes the Saronic Islands and the municipality of Troizinia.

The geography of the peninsula is defined by mountains and plains. Long mountain ranges like Cithaeron and Parnes separate Attica from Boeotia. Parnitha is the highest mountain in the region. Other major mountains include Hymettus, Penteli, Aigaleo, and the Geraneia. These peaks divide the land into several plains. The plains are named Pedias, Mesogeia, and the Thriasian Plain. The Athens urban area spreads across a hilly plain. This plain is surrounded by four main mountains. Notable hills within this area include the Acropolis of Athens and Lykavittos.

Vegetation and water play important roles in the landscape. Pine and fir forests cover the area around Mount Parnitha. Hymettus and Penteli are also forested with pine trees. Other mountains are covered in low shrubbery. The Kifisos is the longest river in Attica. It begins near the foothills of Mount Parnitha. The river flows across the Athenian plain. It eventually empties into the sea near the port of Piraeus. Humans also created Lake Marathon by damming water in 1920.

The history of Attica is deeply tied to the city of Athens. In ancient times, it was the center of the classical Athens city-state. This was a prominent region during the Golden Age of Athens. Ancient people called themselves Autochthones. This meant they believed they were the original inhabitants. Later, Ionian tribes settled there and integrated with the locals. They spoke an Ionian dialect of Ancient Greek. Many of these people later traveled to colonize Asia Minor.

Political changes shaped how the land was organized. In 508/7 BC, Cleisthenes introduced important reforms. He divided Attica into many small municipalities called demes. These demes were grouped into three distinct zones. The first zone was the urban area around Athens and Piraeus. The second was the coastal zone along the sea. The third was the inland zone in the interior. Each sector was divided into tribes. This system helped manage the growing population of farmers, seamen, and townspeople.

Religion and industry were also vital to ancient life. The mines at Laurion were a very important mining region. These mines were located at Lavrio on the southern tip. People also built many temples to honor different gods. The Temple of Poseidon stands at Cape Sounion.

In Eleusis, people worshipped Demeter and Cora. Other areas held festivals for Dionysus or Artemis. The region also used many fortresses for protection. These included sites like Eleutherae, Decelea, and Rhamnous.

Over the centuries, many different groups ruled Attica. The Romans, Byzantines, Venetians, and Ottomans all held power here. In 267 AD, the Heruli tribe raided and destroyed much of the area. During the Ottoman period, many villages faced hardship. However, the people kept their traditions and ancient place names. In the 1820s, Attica peasants were the first to revolt during the Greek War of Independence. In 1834, Athens became the capital of the new Greek state. This caused many people to move to the region. Today, Attica is a busy area where ancient history meets modern urban life.
