Atrophy

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Parts of your body can get smaller. This is called atrophy. It can happen to a cell or an organ.

Sometimes this happens because of a disease. It can also happen if you do not move. If a leg is in a cast, it may get weak.

Not moving can cause muscles to waste away. You can often fix this with exercise.

Atrophy can also be a normal part of growing. Some body parts shrink as you get older.

In old age, skin can get thin. Teeth and hair can also be lost. It is a natural part of life.
