Atlantis is a famous story about a lost island.

Plato Timaeus

This tale comes from the writings of the Greek philosopher Plato. He shared the story in two books named Timaeus and Critias. Plato used the island as an allegory. An allegory is a story that carries a deeper meaning. He wanted to show the difference between a perfect state and a powerful empire. In his view, ancient Athens was the perfect example of a good society. Atlantis was meant to be the opposite of that ideal.

The story describes a very grand and organized place. Plato wrote that the god Poseidon was given the island. Poseidon fell in love with a woman named Cleito. They had many children, including a son named Atlas. Atlas became the first king of the island and the ocean. The island had a special shape with mountains and large plains. It featured a central island surrounded by three rings of water. These rings were separated by strips of land. The people built bridges and canals to move through the city.

According to the text, Atlantis was a mighty naval power. It was much larger than ancient Libya and Asia Minor combined. The Atlanteans conquered many lands, including parts of Europe and Libya. They even reached as far as Egypt. However, the empire lost its goodness after a failed war. Atlantis fought against the Athenians and lost its divine favor. Following this, a great earthquake caused the island to sink. It became a mud shoal in the Atlantic Ocean.

Plato wrote these dialogues around 360 BC. He claimed the story came from Egyptian records. He said a man named Solon heard these tales in Egypt. Some scholars think Plato borrowed ideas from older traditions. They wonder if he was inspired by the Thera eruption. Others think he used the destruction of the city of Helike in 373 BC. Some suggest he was thinking of the Athenian invasion of Sicily. These ideas help us understand how he built his story.

People have many different views on whether Atlantis was real. Most modern scholars agree that the story is fictional. They see it as a way for Plato to teach philosophy. However, some thinkers in the past believed it was history. In the nineteenth century, Ignatius L. Donnelly wrote about it as a real place. Today, the idea of Atlantis is everywhere in our culture. It inspires many comic books, films, and books. It remains a symbol for lost and advanced civilizations.
