Athol Fugard was a famous writer from South Africa.

He wrote over thirty plays. He also wrote books. Fugard used his art to speak out. He wrote about the unfair laws of apartheid. These laws kept people apart based on their race. Fugard felt these laws were wrong. He wanted to show the truth about life.

He worked with a group called the Serpent Players. This group was made of Black actors. They were also teachers and workers. They met with Fugard to learn about the stage. They used theater to tell their own stories. Together, they made famous plays like "Sizwe Banzi Is Dead."
