It starts at the Columbia Icefield in Jasper National Park. The water flows through many parks and near high mountains. It moves past deep gaps called gorges. The river name comes from a Cree word. It means "where there are plants one after another." This refers to the plants that grow along the banks.

Many people live in towns near the river. Some people use the water for fun. In the summer, people go rafting in the water. They can go on scenic trips or ride rapids.

The river has a long history. Many tribes hunted and fished here a long time ago. Later, the river was part of a fur trade route. In 1921, a railway reached the river. This helped move goods by boat and rail. Today, the river is a Canadian heritage river. This means it is a very special place for history and nature.
