It flows through forests and cold tundra lands. The river starts at Thutade Lake in British Columbia. It flows north into the Arctic Ocean.

Along the way, it passes Great Slave Lake. Many smaller rivers join the main river. One river is the Liard River. It brings lots of mud into the water. This makes one side of the river look brown.

The river ends in a huge delta. A delta is where a river splits into many paths. This delta is the second largest in the Arctic.

You can find hills of ice and earth here. We call these hills pingos. Indigenous peoples have lived near the river for thousands of years. In the past, people used the river to trade furs. Today, people find oil and metals in the area. The river is frozen for most of the year. The ice breaks up when spring arrives.
