Stories say she grew up in the wild. A she-bear found her and nursed her. This helped her grow strong and fast. She lived in the woods and loved to hunt. She followed the goddess Artemis.

Atalanta was part of many great tales. She sailed with the Argonauts on a big ship. She was the only woman on that trip. She also helped hunt a huge, wild boar. She was the first to hit the boar with her bow.

Atalanta was a very fast runner. She said she would only marry a man who could beat her in a race. A man named Hippomenes wanted to marry her. He used three golden apples to slow her down. The apples came from the goddess Aphrodite. He won the race by using the fruit. Some stories say the gods turned the pair into lions. Her name is still famous today. An Italian soccer team uses her face on their crest.
