Aswan is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. Its recorded history spans more than 2,600 years. The city acts as a vital hub for tourism and trade. It is also a center for agriculture and diverse industries.

The geography of Aswan is defined by its relationship with the Nile. In antiquity, the city was known as Swenett. It stood on a peninsula below the first cataract. A cataract is a section of a river with rapids or waterfalls. This location made navigation to the Nile Delta possible without barriers.

Because it was the southernmost town, Egypt was often seen to "begin" at Swenett. The city was a crucial military garrison. It also served as a trade station where customs were levied on passing boats. This position made it a gateway between Egypt and the south.

Aswan is famous for its unique geology and stone resources. The local quarries have long supplied granite for Egyptian monuments. This stone is often called syenite.

These quarries provided materials for colossal statues, obelisks, and shrines. You can still see the traces of quarrymen from 3,000 years ago. One notable example is the Unfinished Obelisk. This massive stone pillar remains in the rock. The quarries are still operating in the modern era. They continue to provide stone and aggregates for industry.

The climate in Aswan is a hot desert climate, classified as BWh. It is one of the hottest, sunniest, and driest cities on Earth.

Summer temperatures are extremely high and prolonged. Average highs during these months stay above 38 degrees Celsius. The desert heat is very dry. Winters are brief and pleasantly mild. However, nights can occasionally be cool. The city receives very little annual precipitation. It is so dry that rainfall may not occur for several years. The sky remains clear and bright throughout the year.

Archaeological discoveries in Aswan offer deep insights into human history. The Nubian Museum serves as an important center for these finds.

In 2019, archaeologists found a tomb containing 35 mummified remains. These remains belonged to men, women, and children from the Greco-Roman period. The tomb belonged to a tradesman named Tjit. Other finds include petroglyphs and underwater rock carvings. These artifacts reveal the political and religious practices of various dynasties.

Aswan is recognized by several international organizations. It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site for Nubian Monuments. This includes five specific sites. These are the tombs of Qubbet el-Hawa, Elephantine, the stone quarries, the Monastery of St. Simeon, and the Fatimid Cemetery.

The city is also in the UNESCO Creative Cities Network for craft and folk art. In 2017, it joined the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities. These honors highlight the city's cultural and educational importance.

The modern economy of Aswan is diverse and growing. Tourism is a vital sector driven by Nile cruises and ancient sites. Agriculture also plays a major role in the region. Farmers grow crops such as hibiscus, date palms, and other seasonal plants.
