Asteroseismology

space Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Stars do more than just shine in the night sky. They also vibrate and shake in special ways. This field of study is called asteroseismology. It is the study of these oscillations in stars.

By watching these shakes, astronomers can learn about a star's hidden inside. We cannot see inside a star directly. We usually only see its brightness or its surface temperature. However, these vibrations act like a secret map. They tell us how the star is built.

These vibrations work much like sound waves. The waves travel through the star at different speeds. This happens because the speed of sound changes inside. It depends on the local temperature and the chemical makeup.

There are two main types of waves to find. High-frequency pressure modes are called p-modes. Low-frequency gravity modes are called g-modes. By looking at these modes, scientists can figure out the star's internal structure. This is a very clever way to see what is happening deep inside.

Different things cause these stars to shake. One way is called the kappa mechanism. This works like a valve that traps heat.

When a layer of the star contracts, it becomes more opaque. This means it traps more radiation and heats up. The heat causes the layer to expand and cool. This cycle repeats and drives the pulsation. Other stars shake because of moving fluids near their surface. This is called surface convection. This happens in solar-like oscillators, which are stars that shake like our Sun.

Many different kinds of stars show these movements. Cepheid variables are very important to study. These stars have masses above 5 solar masses. Their pulsation periods help us find how far away they are. RR Lyrae stars are similar but have much lower masses. They are between 0.6 and 0.8 solar masses. Other stars, like Delta Scuti and Gamma Doradus stars, also pulsate. Some stars even show mixed modes. These are modes that have both p-mode and g-mode characters.

Humans use special tools in space to study these stars. The MOST satellite was the first spacecraft dedicated to this work. It launched in 2003. The CoRoT satellite launched in 2006 to find planets and study stars. NASA's Kepler space telescope launched in 2009. Later, the TESS mission launched in 2018 to survey bright stars. A new mission called PLATO is planned for 2026. It will use asteroseismology to find the mass and size of planets. These tools help us understand the universe better.
