Asteroseismology

space Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Stars do more than just shine. They also shake and vibrate. This study is called asteroseismology. It is the study of these star shakes.

These shakes move through a star like sound waves. The waves travel at different speeds. This happens because of the star's heat. It also happens because of what the star is made of. By watching these waves, we can learn about a star's inside. We cannot see inside a star directly. We usually only see its brightness or surface heat. But these waves act like a secret map. They tell us how the star is built.

There are different kinds of waves. Some are called p-modes. These are high-frequency pressure modes. Others are called g-modes. These are low-frequency gravity modes. Some stars shake because of a way called the kappa mechanism. In this way, heat gets trapped like a valve. This heat makes the star expand and contract. Other stars shake because of moving fluids near their surface. Scientists use space tools to study these stars. These tools include the Kepler space telescope and the TESS mission.
