Different countries use the word in different ways. In the United Kingdom, it often means people from South Asia. This includes people from India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. In Canada, the word covers the whole continent. New Zealand uses it for many groups like Chinese, Korean, and Thai people. In Australia, the census splits Asia into four regions. West Asians are grouped with North African and Middle Eastern people there.

In the United States, the name has changed over time. In 1968, activists met to pick a better name. They chose "Asian American." They did not like older names. Some names felt wrong to them. Before 1980, the U.S. census used different groups. In 1980, it first grouped many people as "Asian or Pacific Islander." By 2000, the U.S. split these into two groups. Now, the term includes people from many places like India, China, and Vietnam.
