ASEAN operates through specific principles and mechanisms. The group works on the principle of consensus. This means the members must agree on decisions together. ASEAN also respects national sovereignty. This means the organization cannot force a member state to change its domestic laws. In diplomacy, ASEAN practices the principle of centrality. This means external concerns regarding Southeast Asia should be routed to ASEAN. This helps maintain a unified regional voice.

The organization also manages many decentralized initiatives. These include the ASEAN Power Grid for electricity. They also use the ASEAN Free Trade Area to boost trade. Other projects include an integrated QR code payment system. They even have mutual visa-free policies for travelers.

Member states are located at a historical cultural crossroads. This region sits between East Asia and South Asia. It is positioned at critical junctions of the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea. Since around 100 BCE, these trading routes stimulated the local economy. This influx of trade also brought many new ideas. For example, it introduced various scripts to the region. These included abugida scripts and the Chinese script in Vietnam. Historically, many different writing systems were used. These included Pallava, Kawi, and Jawi scripts.

European colonialism deeply shaped the modern history of these nations. Most ASEAN countries were once colonies. French Indochina included Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. British rule affected Burma, Malaya, and Borneo. The Dutch controlled the East Indies. The Spanish held the Philippines. The Portuguese were in Timor. Only Thailand, then known as Siam, remained uncolonized. Siam acted as a buffer state between British and French territories. However, it still faced political interference and territorial losses. Colonialism also introduced European religions and the Latin alphabet. The defeat of Imperial Japan eventually led to decolonization movements. These movements created the independent states we see today.

The formal roots of ASEAN began with the ASEAN Declaration. This was signed on August 8, 1967. Five countries were the original founders. These were Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand.

Before this, a smaller group called the Association of Southeast Asia existed. That group formed in 1961 with only three members. The original goal of ASEAN was to contain communism. This was due to political shifts in mainland Asia after World War II. Later, the focus shifted toward economic and social development. In 2008, the members signed a binding ASEAN Charter. This charter turned ASEAN into a formal legal entity.

ASEAN has expanded significantly over many decades. Brunei became the sixth member in 1984. Vietnam joined in 1995. Laos and Myanmar joined in 1997. Cambodia joined in 1999 after its government stabilized. The most recent addition is Timor-Leste. Timor-Leste joined on October 26, 2025. This completed a long accession process of twenty years.

The organization also works on regional safety. In 1995, members signed a treaty to create a nuclear-weapon-free zone. This treaty became fully effective in 2001. The group also coordinates responses to public health issues. During the SARS outbreak, members shared best practices. They also worked together during the H1N1 pandemic.

Today, ASEAN faces several modern challenges. It must manage tensions between the United States and China. The organization also deals with territorial disputes in the South China Sea. There is also the ongoing civil war in Myanmar. These issues test the unity of the member states. Despite these challenges, ASEAN is seen as a successful model of regional collaboration. It is different from the European Union because it relies on de facto standards. The chairmanship of the group rotates among the members. In 2026, the Philippines will hold the chairmanship. The headquarters remain located in Jakarta.
