It sits within the Kamikawa Subprefecture and serves as its capital. This city is the second-largest in all of Hokkaido, following Sapporo. Many rivers and streams flow through this land. There are about 130 of them, including the Ishikari and Chūbetsu rivers. Because of these many waters, the city has over 740 bridges. One famous bridge is the Asahibashi, which crosses the Ishikari River.

This bridge is a symbol of the city and is a protected heritage site.

The weather in Asahikawa is very special and quite cold. Winters are long, and the temperature stays below freezing from December to March. The city gets a huge amount of snow every year. In fact, a weather station recorded the lowest temperature in Japanese history here in 1902.

Summers are different because they are warm and humid. Spring and autumn seasons are very short in this area. Because it is so snowy, the city holds a big Winter Festival on the banks of the Ishikari River. People also visit the nearby mountains to use the many ski resorts.

Asahikawa has a long and interesting history. In the Meiji period, people moved there as state-sponsored farmers and soldiers. The area grew from small villages into a town, and then into a city in 1922.

During World War II, it was a military city. Sadly, American planes bombed the city in July 1945. Since then, the city has grown and changed many times. It has joined with many smaller towns over the years to become larger. Today, it is known as a core city and a Design City by UNESCO.

There are many things to see and do in Asahikawa today.
