Arvydas Sabonis is a legendary professional basketball player from Lithuania. He is widely recognized as one of the greatest centers in the history of the sport. A center is a player who typically plays near the basket. Sabonis was famous for his immense height of 2.22 meters. He was also known for his unique skill set. Many experts described him as a "point guard in a center's body." This means that despite his large size, he possessed the passing skills of a smaller player. He could distribute the ball with incredible accuracy and vision. This combination of size and intelligence made him a rare talent on the court.

Sabonis began his journey in basketball at the age of 13. He grew very quickly and joined the Soviet national junior team by age 15. He made his professional debut in 1981 with Žalgiris Kaunas. This is one of the oldest basketball clubs in Lithuania. With Žalgiris, he won three consecutive Soviet Premier League titles. He also helped the team win the 1986 FIBA Club World Cup. His success in Europe eventually led him to Spain. He played for Fórum Valladolid before joining the famous club Real Madrid. At Real Madrid, he won two Spanish League titles. He also captured the FIBA European League title during the 1994–95 season. During that specific season, he averaged 22.9 points and 12.5 rebounds per game. He was also named the FIBA European League Player of the Year twice.

His path to the National Basketball Association (NBA) was filled with significant challenges. The Portland Trail Blazers selected him with the 24th overall pick in the 1986 NBA draft. However, he could not play in the United States immediately. Soviet authorities did not allow him to play in the NBA at that time. Additionally, he suffered a devastating injury to his Achilles' tendon in 1986. The Achilles' tendon is a thick cord that connects your calf muscle to your heel. He also faced many other leg injuries throughout his early career. Because of these obstacles, Sabonis did not play his first NBA game until 1995. He was 30 years old when he finally debuted in the league. Even so, he had a very successful rookie season. He averaged 14.5 points and 8.1 rebounds per game. He was even selected to the All-Rookie First Team.

During his time with the Portland Trail Blazers, Sabonis became a beloved figure. He played seven seasons in the NBA. He helped lead the team to the Western Conference Finals in both 1998 and 1999. Many basketball historians discuss how much more successful he might have been if he had played in the NBA during his prime. In his prime, he was already winning major international trophies. However, the physical toll of his injuries had already begun to affect his mobility. Some observers noted that he moved more slowly than other players. Yet, his "court savvy" and intelligence allowed him to dominate. He could make defenders look foolish with a single, lightning-fast pass. His ability to score and pass made him a centerpiece of the Portland roster.

Sabonis also achieved incredible success on the international stage. He represented the Soviet Union in the 1988 Summer Olympics in South Korea. He helped the team win a gold medal by defeating the United States in the semifinals. This was a historic win against a team featuring future stars like David Robinson. After the Soviet Union dissolved, Sabonis began playing for the independent Lithuanian national team. He won bronze medals at the 1992 and 1996 Olympic Games. These medals were a great source of pride for his home country. His international career included many other honors, such as being named the EuroBasket MVP in 1985. He earned many medals across various FIBA tournaments throughout the 1980s.

This honor recognizes his great play in international competitions. In 2011, he was also named to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. These inductions cement his legacy as one of the best players to ever play the game. Beyond playing, Sabonis has also worked in leadership roles. He served as the President of the Lithuanian Basketball Federation. He also served as the president of his former club, Žalgiris Kaunas. His influence on the sport continues through his family. His son, Domantas Sabonis, is also a professional player in the NBA for the Sacramento Kings.
