Arturo Ripstein is a famous film director from Mexico.

He was born in Mexico City in 1943. His father was a producer. This helped him learn about movies at a young age. He even made short films as a teen.

Ripstein learned a lot from Luis Buñuel. Buñuel was a great filmmaker. They had a mentor and student bond. Ripstein's first big movie was called Tiempo de morir. It was written by famous authors. This started a new way to make films.

His movies often feel sad and slow. They show people who feel very alone. Many of his films use brown colors. They take place in old, dark rooms. Some of his stories are quite dark. They can show people facing hard lives.

Ripstein has won many big prizes. He won nine Ariel awards. He won five for Best Picture. He also won two for Best Director. In 1997, he won the National Prize for Arts and Sciences. Only one other filmmaker had won it before him.
