Scientists have been studying these fossils for a long time. The first fossils were found in 1849 during railway work in Germany. At first, experts like Hermann von Meyer thought it was a type of crustacean. Later, in 1911, Lewis Moysey and Henry Woodward realized it was a myriapod. In 1935, Paul Guthörl described a very large specimen from a German coal mine. This specimen is known as the Maybach specimen. It was a very important find for understanding how big these animals could get.

There are many interesting facts about how Arthropleura looked. Some fossils show that its body could be over 2.5 meters long.

Its legs were made of 9 or 10 parts. Recent studies in 2024 used special scans to look at juvenile fossils from France. These scans showed that the creature had antennae on its head. It also had eyes that sat on stalks. This was very different from the millipedes we see today.

We can learn about Arthropleura by looking at things we recognize. Its hard shell is a bit like the shell of a crab. Its many legs are similar to the legs on a modern millipede. It lived in Europe and North America during the Carboniferous and Permian periods. This was roughly between 344 and 292 million years ago. It likely inhabited open, sparsely wooded areas near water. Some scientists believe it may have been amphibious, living both on land and near lakebeds.

The body of Arthropleura was highly segmented for movement and protection. The dorsal surface, or back, was covered by hard plates called tergites. An adult typically possessed between 28 and 32 of these segments.

Younger animals had fewer segments, usually between 20 and 24. They grew through a process called hemianamorphic development. This means they added new segments during each moult. As they grew, the number of segments increased until they reached their maximum. The sides of the body featured pleurites, which are oval-shaped plates. These plates provided attachment points for the muscles that moved the trunk.

Each body segment supported two pairs of walking legs. These legs were complex, consisting of 9 or 10 segments called podomeres.

Near the base of the legs, there were several specialized ventral plates. These included K-plates, B-plates, and rosette plates. Some researchers believe the K-plates acted as respiratory organs. These plates might have been sac-shaped with a hollow interior. Moving the legs could have helped pump hemolymph, or bodily fluid, through this respiratory system. The legs likely moved in a backward and downward thrusting motion. This specific movement helped support the animal's massive weight.

For a long time, the head of Arthropleura was a mystery. Early researchers thought they were looking at the collum, which is the first segment behind the head. However, a 2024 study using Micro-CT scanning changed this view.

By scanning juvenile fossils from France, scientists revealed the true head region. They found that the head featured a pair of antennae with at least seven segments. The creature also had stalked compound eyes. This is a unique trait not seen in modern millipedes. Beneath the head, they discovered two pairs of maxillae, which are mouthparts. These included small, internal mandibles used for feeding.

Our understanding of Arthropleura has changed significantly since its discovery. The first fossils were found in 1849 during railway construction in Germany. Initially, Hermann von Meyer thought the remains belonged to a large crustacean. In 1911, Lewis Moysey and Henry Woodward correctly identified it as a myriapod.

One estimated specimen had a body mass of 50 kilograms. This makes it as large as the extinct eurypterid Jaekelopterus rhenaniae. We know about their movement through giant trackways found in places like Nova Scotia. These fossil footprints can be up to 40 centimeters wide. These traces provide evidence of how these giants moved through their ancient environments.

Studying Arthropleura helps scientists understand the evolution of arthropods. It sits just outside the group known as Diplopoda, which includes modern millipedes.

Because it has some features of millipedes and some unique traits, it is considered a sister group to the modern millipede crown group. It shows how different body plans, like stalked eyes and specific breathing structures, can emerge in large land animals. By comparing these ancient giants to modern creatures, we learn how life adapts to changing environments over hundreds of millions of years.
