An art gallery is a room or a building designed to display visual art.

These spaces serve many essential purposes in society. People visit them for aesthetic enjoyment or to gain new knowledge through education. They also play a vital role in historic preservation. Modern galleries can function as public institutions or private businesses. They act as a bridge within the art world. This network connects artists, collectors, and experts to define fine art.

There is a technical distinction between a museum and a gallery. An art museum focuses on the preservation of artifacts. These objects have cultural, historical, or aesthetic value. Museums maintain a permanent collection of these valued items. The rooms inside a museum where art is shown are called galleries.

Some establishments use the names interchangeably. For example, the National Gallery is a museum. However, spaces that display art without museum functions are strictly called galleries. Some facilities, known as a kunsthalle, host temporary exhibitions without a permanent collection.

Galleries can be categorized by their economic and social functions. Commercial galleries operate as businesses to sell artworks. They often work on a consignment basis. In this system, the artist and the gallery split the money from a sale. These galleries participate in the primary market by selling new works from living artists. They also engage in the secondary market. This involves selling works from prior periods owned by estates or collectors. The secondary market includes sales of Old Masters, Modern art from 1900 to 1950, and contemporary art.

Non-profit galleries offer a different model for the community. These are often hosted by local governments or non-profit organizations. They provide cultural enrichment and support for local artists. Some start as spaces for artist collectives. Others provide services to specific areas, such as low-income neighborhoods. An example is Artists Space, which was founded in 1972 in SoHo, New York City. There are also "vanity galleries" that charge artists a fee to exhibit. These are considered unprofessional because they lack a selection process to ensure quality.

The history of art display has changed significantly since the Middle Ages. During that time, painters and sculptors belonged to guilds. They worked on commissions for churches or aristocratic patrons. In the 16th century, academies of art were established. These academies helped artists raise their status. They moved from being seen as mere artisans to being respected as intellectual creators. The term "gallery" originally meant a long, narrow covered passage. By the 1590s, it began to refer to a place for art. In the Victorian era, commercial galleries became well-established as more people sought to own art.

Art dealers and gallerists play a central role in the modern market. They help manage the reputation of an artist. This reputation is built on aesthetic factors and economic success. Aesthetic factors include art schools attended and the opinions of critics. Economic factors include participation in group or solo exhibitions. Dealers often "discover" new talent and promote them in group shows. One famous model was set by Leo Castelli. He was an exclusive agent who actively developed new artists. He focused on new works rather than the resale of older pieces.

Art galleries are often found in specific geographic clusters. Historically, artists moved to areas with low rent, such as marginal neighborhoods. In New York, this led to the growth of Greenwich Village and later SoHo. Today, local governments sometimes create intentional arts districts. These districts combine living spaces with galleries to revitalize neighborhoods. Some areas hold "first Friday events." These are coordinated nights where many galleries hold openings at once. Even temporary "popup galleries" have become a contemporary trend. These use vacant commercial spaces for short exhibitions.
