Arsenic is a chemical element with the symbol As and atomic number 33. It is a metalloid, which means it has properties of both metals and non-metals.

It is a member of a group called the pnictogens. This group includes neighbors like phosphorus and antimony. Arsenic is very well known for being toxic to humans.

It can be found naturally in many different minerals. Often, it is found combined with sulfur and other metals. Sometimes, it can even be found as a pure crystal.

Arsenic exists in different forms called allotropes. The most common form is grey arsenic, which looks metallic.

This grey form is very important for many industries. It is used to make alloys, which are mixtures of metals. For example, arsenic is mixed with lead for car batteries and ammunition. Another form is yellow arsenic, which is soft and waxy.

Yellow arsenic is the most volatile and toxic form. There is also black arsenic, which is glassy and brittle.

People have known about arsenic since ancient times. They knew it was a poison for humans.

While it is dangerous to most, some bacteria can actually use it. These tiny living things use arsenic compounds for their breathing processes. In some animals, like rats, hamsters, goats, and chickens, tiny amounts might even be part of their diet. However, if the amount is larger than what the body needs, it causes poisoning in multicellular life.

Arsenic is the 53rd most abundant element in the Earth's crust. It makes up about 1.5 parts per million of the crust.

In the ocean, it is the 22nd most abundant element in seawater. Most arsenic used by industry comes from minerals like arsenopyrite. In 2015, Peru and China were the top producers of white arsenic. They produced almost 89% of the world's supply. Many arsenic refinement jobs in the US and Europe have closed due to environmental concerns.

Arsenic is a serious risk to human health. The United States Environmental Protection Agency says all forms of it are risky.

It is also classified as a group-A carcinogen. This means it is a substance that can cause cancer. Arsenic can contaminate groundwater, which affects millions of people globally. In 2001, the US Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry ranked arsenic as number one on a list of hazardous substances. This shows how much care we must take with this element.
